CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s official holiday isn't until next Monday. But Wednesday would have been the civil rights leader's 85th birthday.

Dr. King was born in Atlanta, Georgia on Jan. 15, 1929. He won a Nobel Peace Prize and a long list of other awards for his efforts to bring racial equality to America.

But he did not live to see many of the great changes his movement inspired. He was assassinated in 1968.

Dr. King's birthday became an official holiday back in 1983.
