Police: Jewelry store owner shot suspect during attempted robbery

Posted: Updated:

A woman who allegedly tried to rob a jewelry store is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot several times by the store owner.

Phoenix police say the owner and the suspect exchanged gunfire Tuesday afternoon at Diamond Star AZ Jewelry near 13th Street and Northern Avenue.

The woman fled the scene, but was arrested a short distance away in a nearby neighborhood and taken to an area hospital. Authorities say she was shot several times by the store's owner after she allegedly tried to rob it.

The name of the woman hasn't been released, but police say she appears to be in her late 20s.  She hasn't been booked into jail because she remains hospitalized.

Police say the store owner also was shot, but has less severe injuries. His customers are very upset.

"He's an older gentleman in his 70s.. nice guy.. wouldn't want to believe anybody would want to hurt him," said Charles Daley.

Police aren't releasing the owner's name, but say he was shot in the lower extremities during the attempted robbery.

"This should never happen to him, I'll tell you that," said Daley.

Nicole Nugent added, "I was just saying a prayer for me and my daughter.. we were just about to go in the store.. I literally live three streets down from here."

Customers are relieved to learn that the man they do business with is expected to be okay.

"It's a family owned shop.  They're nice people.  The shop next door has been here for a long time, but crime in this area has been rising unfortunately," said Nugent.

Phoenix Police are hoping for more information in this case.  If you can help, call 602-262-6151.
