Campus carry gun law expected to seek passage

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Legislators are expected to debate a law that would allow college students in Georgia to carry guns on campus.

A bill narrowly missed passage last year. House Bill 29 fell apart last year after all 18 members of the Board of Regents signed a letter opposing it.  However this year, the gun bill could pass.

Rep. Emory Dunahoo is a proponent for the bill.  He believes Georgia college students are unprotected and vulnerable without firearms.  He says female students walking between buildings at Georgia State University tell him they are concerned.

In addition to strong opposition from the Board of Regents, legislators say a wide open campus carry law is not a sure thing.

Gov. Nathan deal remains non-committal on the issue.  He favors allowing individual schools to decide whether to opt into the bill or not.
