Help pours in for homeless veteran living in van

A homeless veteran who has been living in a van for the last year is getting some help.

As reported on FOX 5 on Monday, John Chambers, a Vietnam veteran, lost his Marietta home in a foreclosure. He has lived in a van with his dog, Scout, for the last year.

The 65-year-old lost his job at Walmart and spent his pension and social security on legal fees to fight the foreclosure.  

Since the story aired, there has aired there has been an outpouring of support to help Chambers from housing offers to financial donations.  He says it will take about $57,000 to get his house back and is humbled by all of the support.

"I don't know what to say. You know, I could have been out here a year with a sign of taking donations but I don't really think that is the right thing to do," Chambers said. "I don't get food stamps. I don't get any government assistance in any way and I never ever wanted it. All I wanted to do was make a stand to get my house back."
