Lesbian Student Named Prom King In NY

Posted: Updated:

In Long Island, New York, a surprise winner for prom king is causing controversy.

That's because a lesbian student, Faith Shepherd ran for prom king and won the title by a landslide! Shepherd thought it would be a long shot to run for the honorary title at Central Islip High School.

"I made it very clear I wanted to run for king not queen," Shepherd said.

Classmates and teachers supported her not-so-traditional run, and she won the crown by a landslide.

"It felt like everyone was on my side we were united," Shepherd said.

The election took place in October but is still creating fallout.

Superintendent Craig Carr says the district doesn't have a policy in place that dictates gender roles for homecoming nominees.

"This young woman who won the king's post overwhelming was voted in by the student body," Carr says.

But Pastor Donald Hudson from Common Ground Christian Life church questioned Shepherd's crowning at a school board meeting.

Hudson argues crossing gender lines creates confusion.

"The advisors allowed it, assistant principal allowed it, (and the) principal allowed it by changing the order without going the proper channels," Hudson says. "There has to be consequences for them."

But under the New York State Dignity for All Students Act, students cannot be subject to discrimination based on gender identity or expression.

This isn't the first time this has happened in the district.

Back in 2010, a female student was elected homecoming king at the same school.

"It speaks to the student body that they are so progressive here in Central Islip," Carr says.

In February the Board of Education will discuss the issue again and the school board will decide if any policy changes need to be made in choosing future homecoming nominees.
