Human trafficking billboards feature hotline to report crimes, help victims

Posted: Updated:

During her State of the State Address, Governor Jan Brewer urged the Legislature to do more to crack down on human trafficking in Arizona and on Monday, new anti-trafficking billboards were unveiled.

The billboards display the number for the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline where people can report crimes and get help for victims.

Cindy McCain, who is co-chair of Gov. Brewer's task force on human trafficking, along with the Polaris Project and Trust groups, announced the billboards.

Clear Channel donated the space on its billboards.

McCain says trafficking is a serious issue in Arizona, nationally and internationally.   She talked about the importance of these billboards and getting the word out.

"This is such a game changer for the state of Arizona and it is exactly what we needed to begin and more importantly, to keep our message in front of all of you, so I can't thank you enough.. the folks from Clear Channel have really made a social commitment that is bar none here in Arizona and I'm so glad you're part of Arizona thank you," she said.

"We've taken almost 100,000 calls on the national hotline.  We've learned about 12,000 survivors and the other thing that's important about the hotline is you learn critical insight -- it's about how and where human trafficking is happening so that we as a community can strategize around how to fight it," said Brandon Bouchard of the Polaris Project.

McCain says efforts will continue to crack down on trafficking ahead of the Super Bowl in Arizona next year.
