Abandoned baby chicks get a new home

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some baby chicks have something to chirp about because they got a new lease on life, after being abandoned in the freezing cold.

"They are cute, they are a lot of fun, but in most cases they die miserably," said Dr. John Charos of Central Veterinary Associates. "People release them outside, wild cats get them, birds get them or they freeze to death."

The chicks were left in a box in front of a Petland Discounts store in Hempstead, Long Island, just a few days after Christmas.

"They were probably about a week old at that time, body wise they were in decent condition, but they had been a bit hypothermic being out in the box and out in the cold," Charos said.

Concerned Petland Employees took them to the vet, where they were nursed back to health.

Now the chicks are headed to the Dorothy P. Flint 4H Camp in Riverhead where they'll live permanently and be used for educational purposes.

"We'll probably put this on a Facebook, every week we'll take pictures of them as they grow up," said Maria Devlin, who works at the camp. "And the children will start naming them."

One of the chicks died from complications.

There are no leads on who left the chicks, but the vets are just grateful that they're in safe hands.
