Record-setting sex trafficking sentence in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A man convicted of running a sex trafficking ring in the Twin Cities was sentenced to 40 years in prison – the longest sentence ever for that crime in Minnesota.

For years, Otis Washington and three of his family members had been selling women and girls for sex, using online websites.

"We're talking about the buying and selling of children," said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi.

His brother Antonio was sentenced to 36 years in prison and an uncle received a 7-year sentence. Another uncle was given probation and community service.

Survivor advocates say these sentences make one point clear: Prostitution is ultimately sexual exploitation, and sex trafficking -- and the women involved therein -- are not to be seen as criminals.
