Autistic student takes truck for ride outside of middle school

Posted: Updated:
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

An autistic middle school student stole a truck and caused a scene right outside of his school in Clayton County on Thursday.

Construction workers building an addition onto M.D. Roberts Middle School said they were high up on steel girders when they noticed one of their Dodge Ram trucks begin to drive away.

Clayton County Schools has identified the young boy who got behind the wheel as an autistic special needs student. He was supposed to be in gym class when officials noticed him missing.  About that same time came the ruckus from the neighboring construction site on campus.

"The keys were left in the vehicle. The student got in the vehicle and put it into gear and basically drove it a few yards into a mud embankment," said Vickie Gavalas of Clayton County Schools.

The truck suffered some minor damage to the front end.  The boy jumped out of truck and tried to take another car, but had trouble according to the owner, Rohan Knight.

"I guess he couldn't drive it because my car is a stick shift," said Knight.

There's no word on what motivated the middle school student. Officials don't expect charges to be filed.  The school will investigate to find out how the he got out of the building.

"We don't believe at this point that he was missing for very long, but of course we need to do a thorough investigation to find out what's happened," said Gavalas.

Clayton County's police chief said that he doesn't believe the boy understand his actions.
