PHOENIX (AP) - A man already in prison has been accused in the beating death of a 75-year-old Phoenix woman at her home in 2006.
Maricopa County prosecutors announced Thursday that 41-year-old Jose Manuel Muros Nevares has been indicted on first-degree murder and burglary.
Cold case detectives with the county Attorney's Office teamed with Phoenix police to identify Nevares as a suspect in the death of Patricia Staggs and submit the case to a grand jury.
Authorities say DNA evidence collected from the murder scene was submitted to an FBI system in 2012 and produced a match.
DNA had been taken from Nevares during an unrelated contact with law enforcement.
Nevares is serving time in an Arizona prison for a drug-related offense and detectives say they interviewed him about the Staggs case.
