A Monticello, Minn. man's dinner plans got him arrested on Monday.
Cody Mann, 28, was charged Wednesday with two counts animal cruelty and animal torture after he told police he skinned his pet cat and baked it in the oven. Onions were also intended to be added as accompaniments to the cat, according to charges.
Mann's father told police his son had been making strange comments to him and requested police complete a welfare check at Mann's apartment in Monticello. His father said he knew his son to be a drug user and said his son also suffers from mental illness.
Upon arrival, police could not reach Mann but an apartment manager reported a burning smell in his apartment and requested police to assist with entry. Wright County Deputy Yauk saw smoke and noticed a burnt hair smell coming from the apartment, and upon entering, Mann quickly admitted what he had done with his pet cat.
In the bathtub, police found evidence of where the cat had been skinned, including red smear marks, hair and a steak knife. The cat's skin an entrails were found in the freezer, and a dish with partially eaten cat food and a water dish were also found in the apartment.
Mann said he didn't understand what the problem was and he was brought to Monticello Hospital for a mental evaluation and later booked in jail.
