Is your commute causing you to gain weight?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta has the seventh longest commute in the county with just under 35 minutes on the road, each way. So, with all that time behind the wheel you've got to wonder what it's doing to your health?

FOX Medical Team's Beth Galvin spoke with "the ultimate commuter": a cross country truck driver. Michael Purdon, a driver for Halvor Lines, spends about ten times more than the average driver in his truck daily; he drives about eleven hours, every day.

And even though Purdon doesn't eat a diet of fast food like a typical truck drivers, he realized he was getting too heavy, last year, and he decided to make a change.

"I gained about 40 pounds, last year. I started noticing my pants didn't fit anymore. They were shrinking in the closet on me," Purdon said. "And you just wonder, how did I gain all of this weight? But I was just sitting there for eleven hours per day."

Long hours, no exercise, stress and poor eating are often the cause of serious health problems. So Lindora Clinic, a clinic that focuses on obesity, got on the case. They challenged truck drivers to lose 10 percent of their weight in ten weeks with the help of a coach.

So, now Purdon buys fresh fruit and has committed to working out, every day. Since October, he has lost 30 pounds.

"You've just got to watch what you eat and maybe get out. Just something to get the blood circulating," Purdon said.
