Most homeowner's insurance policies cover busted pipes

Posted: Updated:

Many homeowners in the metro Atlanta area will be filing insurance claims after freezing temperatures caused pipes to burst.

The good news is burst pipes in your home are almost always covered by your homeowner's insurance. Industry experts though say there are other things to consider as you begin the clean-up process.

Jamie Kimbrough with the Georgia Insurance Information Service says all homeowners should have a plan.

"The first thing you need to do, obviously, is get the water turned off at its source, where it's coming from the street because you don't want the pipes to keep leaking water and potentially damaging other parts of your home," said Kimbrough. "Be patient and make sure everything goes smoothly and you're in contact with your agent, there's not a whole lot else you can do."

Experts say in most cases, dealing with insurance companies is pretty tidy.

"I can tell you based on my experience, a pipe freeze is usually well-covered by your insurance and they work very well with us. Most restoration companies bill them directly," said Rachel Johnston of Servpro Restoration Services.

Being prepared goes a long way, but it's not just homeowners that need a plan and coverage.

"Particularly, we're seeing a lot of apartment complexes that are having burst pipes and someone in there,  if you don't have renters insurance, then your property is not covered," said Kimbrough.

With more than 50 percent of the country thawing out, Kimbrough says above all be patient.

"There may be a little bit of a backlog, but insurance companies are really working hard to get to get things pushed through as quickly as possible because they know people need to get back in their homes and live their normal lives," said Kimbrough.

Be sure to read over your insurance policies and understand everything they do and don't cover. Some policies will even put you up at a hotel if the damage is bad enough.
