Busy work for tugboats in icy New York Harbor

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Three tugboats pushed and towed the cargo container ship Antwerp out of dock to head out to sea on Wednesday. One of the tugboats is the Ellen McAllister. Most of the work is done by the tugboat itself with its 4,000-horsepower engines.

Some work is done outside by deck hand Joe Worrie in the frigid weather. He is wearing four shirts. Other crew members say they wear a lot of clothing and work quickly, efficiently.

Efficiently but safely, with all the ice on the tugboat you can slip and fall in the water. You only have a few minutes to survive -- that is if you don't get a heart attack from the shock of hitting the cold water. Tugboat work is 24 hours a day 7 days a week for two weeks. Six hours on six hours off so there is always night work.
