The most important position on an NFL team currently holds the biggest question marks for the Minnesota Vikings. While they will likely draft at least one signal caller, the results are not instant and as we have learned guaranteed.
Currently only Christian Ponder is the only quarterback signed. Matt Cassel is an unrestricted free agent that holds a player option to return in 2014 and Josh Freeman, who was signed mid-season is a free agent and will not return.
Drafting a franchise quarterback has been the call to order for the Vikings for the better part of four decades and they will likely take another shot in May's draft. For years, they have gone the free-agent veteran route but with every other team locking up their quarterback, finding the right guy has never been more critical.
Obviously names will shift as the draft nears, but Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Blake Bortles are at the top of mock drafts and would be long gone by the time the Vikings select 8th overall. In 2011, we saw Rick Spielman reach for Christian Ponder taking him 12th overall. Does he have the faith to take the next best quarterback or the best player available?
Current mock drafts have the Vikings selecting Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr with the 8th overall pick. Carr, the younger brother of former overall number one pick David finished with 50 touchdown passes and over 5,000 yards passing leading Fresno State to an 11-2 record.
Other names to watch:
In addition to the names listed above, Clemson's Tajh Boyd and Miami's Stephen Morris have watched their early stock drop. Boyd is still projecting as a second round selection while Morris has dropped into the sixth round in some mock drafts. Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo and San Jose State's David Fales sit as fourth round projections.
Cassel- Cassel brings the best hope to serve as a bridge between the current and the future. The likely scenario is that the rookie the team selects will not be ready to play (nor should they) out of the gate. That leaves the team with someone needed to fill the void. Enter, or should we say re-enter Matt Cassel.
