Fundraiser for injured police officer involves medical marijuana dispensary

Posted: Updated:

A Phoenix police officer is still in critical condition after being shot on New Year's Eve.  Fundraisers are being held to raise money for Scott Sefranka and one of those fundraisers involves a Phoenix marijuana dispensary and they've already received $1,000.

It's a first for Phoenix police -- a medical marijuana dispensary holding a raffle to help Officer Sefranka.

"As a medical marijuana dispensary, its important for the community to understand that we and our patients are just like anyone else in the community," said Lezli Engleking, Executive Director of Bloom Dispensaries.

Engleking hopes donating to the community helps shatter the stigma surrounding a state licensed medical marijuana dispensary.

"There's a little of a stigma because were new a lot of people don't understand that we are the same as any other business," she said.

Anyone who buys a $5 ticket will be put in a raffle to get a free $300 medical marijuana card if they qualify.

"It's a licensed business.  Who am I to judge?  In terms of they are clearly part of the community, we are appreciative. The fact that they're supportive," said Joe Clure of the PLEA Phoenix Officers Union.

Bloom will write a check on Tuesday and take it to a big BBQ fundraiser sponsored by PLEA.  They admit they hadn't heard a marijuana dispensary was donating.

"Not until you had mentioned it to me. It's not uncommon for business and individuals and people across the valley to be very very supportive of law enforcement when tragedies such as this to happen," said Clure.

The Phoenix Police Department isn't talking about the fundraiser.  They did call Bloom Tuesday morning and asked them to remove the Phoenix Police logo from Bloom's web site.  Within minutes, the logo was gone.
