Does the extreme cold raise your risk of getting the flu?

Is it true that being out in the severe cold raises your rise of getting sick?

Dr. Sanford Vieder from Lakes Urgent Care says, "In an indirect way it can. Being out in the extreme cold reduces our immunities a little bit, so that puts us at risk. But the biggest risk is because we tend to stay indoors. It's so cold outside, we're in close contact, close quarters, so we recirculate these viruses that tend to get us sick."

Vieder says the severity and the timing of the symptoms can point out if you have the flu or not. If the symptoms come on strong and quickly, it may be the flu. If a sore throat gradually gets worse over a period of days, it's more than likely not the flu.

He also reminds it's still not too late to get your flu vaccination for the year.
