MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak was released from Abbott Northwestern Hospital on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack over the weekend.

Doctors performed two angioplasty surgeries and inserted six stents during Rybak's Saturday through Tuesday stay.

"R.T. is in great spirits and has returned to his usual self, often joking and being certain that people know the trails were outstanding on Saturday and are aware he skied 7.7 miles before friends called 911," a family statement said. "He'll be recuperating over the next couple of weeks and beginning work soon after. The family is hoping others will learn from this experience making sure that everyone in their family is aware of their medical health history."

The three-term mayor had just finished a nearly 8-mile cross-country ski run at Theodore Wirth Park on Saturday when he noticed he wasn't feeling right. The 58-year-old was feeling short of breath and headed for his car when he ran into a couple of friends who called 911.

RYBAK'S HEROES: "We suggested calling 911, and at first, he asked us not to..."
