What exactly is wind chill and how is it calculated?

The Wind Chill Chart The Wind Chill Chart

The wind chill is a scientifically-calculated number. There's actually a long equation for it that was calculated by the National Weather Service. Scientists took volunteers, put them on treadmills, had them walking in a refrigerated room and it helped them put this equation together.

Now, you can imagine that it's probably a lot of work to do the equation for every different location. So meteorologists use a chart from the National Weather Service. The chart helps you figure out how that temperature feels on your exposed skin roughly about five feet off the ground, usually at night and walking directly into that wind.

The wind chill is a big concern out there for later Monday night and, of course, the next couple of days as temperatures will drop down anywhere between 30 and 40 below zero. Make sure you're careful if you're heading outside for any prolonged period of time.
