Protecting your home from freezing temperatures

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - With extreme temperatures comes a preventative measure for everything. These cold temperatures can damage just about anything, even your home. The Red Cross has some warnings and preventative measures to protect your home, before we reach the record low numbers.

During the frigid temperatures, remember to keep your garages doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Also, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night; this will help prevent your pipes from freezing.

To help keep your home warm and possibly even keep your heating bill to a minimum you should keep drapes and blinds closed. Also, put draft snakes on window sills, between window frames and against doors this will help keep the warm air in and the cold air out.

Another way to help prevent your pipes from freezing is by removing, draining and storing hoses that are used outside. Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve.”
