#fox5freeze: Tips for staying warm in freezing temperatures

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - As below-freezing temperatures slam the East Coast, people should begin to prepare themselves for temperatures that are known to bring on hypothermia and frost bite.

SMART TIPS FOR COLD WEATHER
We all know the typical suggestions when it comes to staying warm, but there are a few the Red Cross wants you to remember that might not be as well-known.

LAYER UP: Wearing several layers of loose, lightweight, oversized clothes will actually keep you warmer than fitted or bulky clothing.

BREATH IN THROUGH YOUR NOSE: If you have to be out walking around, be sure to cover your mouth with a scarf or a hat to protect your lungs from the freezing temperatures as well.  Breathing through your nose will help your body warm the outside temperatures before they reach your lungs.

HOT BEVERAGES ARE BEST: Also, doctors encourage you to drink hot beverages like tea and hot cocoa to warm your core. But, they also suggest you avoid alcohol as that will give you a false sense of warmth.

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

Watching for signs of hypothermia is also important.  Among them: confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe. If you are experiencing these symptoms, get to a warm place quickly.

Warning signs of frost bite are numbness, flushed gray, white, blue, or yellow skin discoloration, or waxy-feeling skin. Seek medical attention quickly if you are seeing these signs.

DON'T FORGET YOUR PETS
It's important to think about your pets when the temps plummet. The Red Cross says there should be no such thing as an outdoor animal when temperatures get bitterly cold. All animals should be brought inside to keep warm, and to have water that is not frozen.

HELP YOUR ELDERLY NEIGHBORS

In addition to pets, children and the elderly need extra attention. So, keep an eye out for your neighbors who need help, and make sure your children are following the same rules of layering that we listed above.
