Medical Student Saves Life During Training

Posted: Updated:

A medical student at the University of Virginia examining a fake patient as part of his training saved an actor's life.

Ryan Jones was taking part in a program at the university which allows actors to pretend to have ailments that the doctor must diagnose.

Jones found an aneurysm in acting patient Jim Malloy. At first, Malloy who had, ironically, been asked to act out the symptoms of an aneurysm didn't realize the junior doctor's diagnosis was real.

"He thought I might have been a ringer that was planted in there to test him, but it wasn't, and I had no symptoms. So he just, he thought I was a plant with the real situation," Malloy said. "I really didn't think anything of it until the supervising doctor told me they had discovered something. Then I was concerned that Ryan found, felt an aneurysm."

Jim says he spoke with Ryan and has thanked him for having the courage to speak up and saving his life.

He had surgery to fix the aneurysm last summer. Jones, who is in his last year of medical school, says he plans on becoming a radiation oncologist.

Louise Malloy, Jim's Wife, says it would have been a very different year if had not been for Ryan and the Standardized Patient Program.
