Dr. Chris offers five cold weather safety tips as Minnesotans wait for Sunday night into Monday morning to bring some of the coldest temperatures in the state in nearly two decades.
1. KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Frostbite can occur with in 4 to 5 minutes of exposure.
2. KNOW THE RISK AREAS
Frostbite typically appears in areas farthest away from the bulk of your body -- ears, nose, fingers, toes.
3. PLAN AHEAD
Stock hats, gloves, jackets, blankets and keep your cell phone on you in your car in case you get stuck.
4. TELL A FRIEND
If you have to brave the cold, tell someone where you're going so they can check in and ensure you're safe.
5. KNOW WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION
If you see black on any areas of your body after exposure to the cold, get to a hospital.
