Long lines in Colorado for first few days of legal weed sales

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The new year is bringing legal marijuana sales in the state of Colorado. The state had 24 shops open Wednesday, most of them in Denver. Buyers dealt with long lines and some reports of shoppers smoking in public.

Washington has also voted to legalize recreational marijuana use. That state is expected to open retail shops by late spring.

20 states and the District of Columbia now have legal marijuana in one form or another. 14 other states are expected to follow suit in the next 2 years.

Advocates of the drug say if all 50 states taxed it like alcohol and tobacco, it would generate almost $9 billion a year.

Fox 2's Jason Carr asked travelers arriving from Denver what they saw. Click the video player above to find out.
