Body of Winona State student recovered from Wis. creek

Posted: Updated:

Police say the body of a driver found inside a submerged car in a creek in La Crosse, Wis., has been identified as a 21-year-old Winona State University student.

The body of Ellen Marie Ahmann, of Woodbury, Minn., was recovered from Swift Creek early on New Year's Day.

Divers retrieved her body from her vehicle, which was submerged in 6 to 8 feet of water.

Officials responded to the scene after a bus driver called 911 at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday after noticing tire tracks leaving the street and going over a 40-foot embankment.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.
