Police release surveillance video of hit and run suspect

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

A hit and run crash sent a 24-year old man to the hospital with serious injuries.  Now Tempe Police are releasing new surveillance video -- hoping to track down the suspect.

The crash happened nearly a week ago and police still do not know who was behind the wheel of that gray Nissan Xterra -- the vehicle that hit the victim who was skateboarding.

In the surveillance video, moments before the crash, you can see the victim near University Drive and Ash Avenue.  A few minutes later, you see the Nissan headed in the same direction.

This is evidence police hope leads to some answers.  Who was the driver that hit the skateboarder, leaving him in critical condition?

"We don't have the actual crash on video, but we understand now talking to additional witnesses that there was a passenger in that vehicle we are trying to locate right now, so we really feel that somebody -- at least two people know what happened and know who was involved in that crash," said Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

We now know the victim's name is Dustin Kalkbrenner, but there are no leads on a suspect.

Tempe Police do however have a suspect description: a white male with bushy brown shoulder length hair who may be wearing a pick or comb in his hair and is believed to be in his 20s.

"It's very tragic that we have a 24-year-old skateboarder.. an adult male that is basically clinging to life.. very critical at this point nearly week after crash," said Carbajal.

Police say the SUV sped away from the scene, heading southbound.  It was last seen near Farmer Avenue and University Drive.

If you have any information about this case, call the Tempe Police at (480) 966-6211 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.
