How to keep your indoor plants alive through the winter

Posted: Updated:

Dale K. offers his tips for indoor plant care as we embark on a long winter ahead – unless, of course, you'd prefer to look at white, brown and grey until spring arrives.

What does the light requirement mean on your plant's tag?

Direct light: 6+ hours

Moderate: 4+ hours

Indirect: No direct sun

Low light: Minimal light

-Find a plate with indents to collect water from beneath the plant, ensuring the water seeps out

-Water until the plant begins to deposit water

-Empty the dish after a day or two of excess water

-Use a decorative watering can to leave out and remind you to water your plants

If the pot is breaking or the roots are escaping, go up a pot size so the old pot fits snugly into the new pot

Spray for bugs or sprinkle granules atop the soil

Dale says don't use a leaf shine spray, wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust
