New cameras target drivers passing by stopped Montgomery County school buses

Posted: Updated:
POTOMAC, Md. -

An estimated 600 to 1,000 motorists drive by stopped school buses in Montgomery County each year. It is against the law and county officials want to put a stop to it.

Starting Thursday, they have added cameras to its arsenal to battle violators. Montgomery County Public Schools is spending $250,000 to outfit buses with cameras. Five buses at first, and over the next month, it will grow to 25.

Montgomery County Public Schools Transportation Director Todd Watkins says they will eventually pre-wire 75 other buses, so they can move the 25 cameras they have to areas that need them.

Montgomery County Police Captain Tom Didone, who heads up the police’s Traffic Division, says people break the law because they are uninformed, impatient or distracted. He wants people to know the law requires drivers to stop when they are on either side of a school bus, when it stops to unload students and is flashing its lights and has extended its stop sign.

Violating the rules will be costly. $125 if you are caught on camera. $570 and three points on your license if you are spotted by the cops.
