FALLS CHURCH, Va. -

Two masked men robbed the State Theatre in Falls Church Wednesday morning, showing up just before 7 a.m. and taking cash at gunpoint from the only employee left in the building.

Falls Church police took their time investigating the holdup, wrapping the concert and party venue with yellow tape while a crime scene investigator snapped photos.

Police say the men showed up just after dawn looking for the proceeds from the night before.

"The two suspects are described as black males in their 20s, possibly younger,” said Susan Finarelli, spokesperson for City of Falls Church Police. “They were both wearing black-hooded sweatshirts, black baseball caps and bandanas.”

In the hours before the holdup, the place was packed with ticket holders willing to pay $50 to bring in the new year while being entertained by The Legwarmers, a 1980s party band.

There were a lot of people dancing and listening to the music of The Legwarmers here at the State Theatre Tuesday night. The place was completely sold out. The sign says, “Sorry, we have no tickets left! (not even one!)”

Falls Church police had few details on how the men entered the building or why an employee was there at 7 a.m.

"I'm not sure why the employee would have been there, but it does seem reasonable that there was cleanup and paperwork to do,” said Finarelli.

A look around the building revealed no surveillance cameras and no one answered the door to the theater after the investigators left.

Our attempts to reach the owner or anyone connected to the theater were unsuccessful.
