NEW YEAR'S EVE: Are you in or out?

Posted: Updated:

Although 2013 is ending on a chilly note in the Twin Cities, spirits are still high -- but for some people, the frigid weather isn't what's keeping people from heading out for festivities. They prefer to stay in.

Only about half of Americans go out on New Year's Eve, and the subzero temperatures in Minnesota certainly aren't making a voyage seem very appealing. Even so, many Minnesotans don't mind being out in the cold for the sake of tradition.

"We see turkeys and deer… out here with friends," Camille Kimmes told Fox 9 News while exploring a luminous winter hike at Fort Snelling State Park.

More than 1,000 brave souls faced the frigid air to take a candle-light walk on the wild side. For Kimmes, it was the third year she and her children came to say goodbye to the previous year and welcome a new one.

Local liquor stores were also booming as people stocked up on the right spirits to help ring in the New Year, and that's where an annual question emerged once more -- stay in or go out?

The most popular activity on New Year's Eve is going out to dinner, but most of the people who spoke with Fox 9 News say they no longer bother with resolutions since they don't want to set themselves up to fail.
