PHOENIX (AP) - A man accused of carjacking an elderly couple near Ahwatukee and driving off with the male passenger still in the vehicle has pleaded not guilty.

Chateen Latfolla was arraigned Monday on charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, vehicle theft, possession of narcotic drugs and outstanding warrants.

The 32-year-old Latfolla allegedly carjacked the vehicle on Dec. 14 after crashing his pickup truck, which was being pursued by authorities for numerous traffic violations.

Authorities say Latfolla approached an SUV and pulled the 85-year-old female driver out of the vehicle. He drove off without realizing the woman's 91-year-old husband remained in the passenger seat.

Latfolla was later arrested at a casino and was found to be in possession of a black tar substance believed to be heroin.

His next court date is Jan. 29.
