SAINT CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A local family says they were the victims of gift card fraud. A $100 gift card was drained by crooks in California before they had the chance to redeem it.

Terry Collins purchased a Macy's gift at a Kroger store in Saint Clair Shores. When his wife tried to use it, there was a zero balance. Macy's told Terry the card was cleaned out in Riverside, California. But, the family never left Michigan. It turns out the card was duplicated and a cyber crook spent every penny.

Reports of gift card fraud have been popping up across the country. One tell tale sign, the micro encoding number on the back of the card is compromised.
