URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A newly renovated, century-old building on the University of Illinois campus has earned the nation's highest "green building" designation.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Saturday the historic Lincoln Hall has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, platinum status.

The designation from the U.S. Green Building Council indicates the project was designed and built to improve energy savings and stewardship of resources.

Lincoln Hall was built between 1909 and 1911 and is a centerpiece of the University of Illinois campus.

The state paid for most of the three-year, $60.4 million renovation that was completed in 2012.

Quinn's office says Lincoln Hall is only the second historic building in Illinois to receive the LEED platinum designation.

Efforts such as reusing wood trim and doors helped make the project environmentally friendly.
