Stomach virus dampens holidays for some

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A nasty viral infection is making the rounds this holiday season.  The bug packs a punch and hangs around for week.

Dr. James Short of Wellstreet Urgent Care diagnosed the first cases of the viral infection about a month ago. He said he's seen a spike in recent weeks.

"Probably 80 to 90 percent of everybody we are seeing really ends up being a simple viral infection, which can lead and cause you to have a fever, aches -- similar symptoms as the flu but to a much, much lesser degree," Short said.

The best defense is a good offense. Dr. Short says cleaning common areas at home and work with disinfecting wipes and using hand sanitizers, in addition to good old fashioned hand washing, will help keep the virus at bay.
