Elderly woman robbed in her West Bloomfield garage

(WJBK) -

A woman in her 80s was attacked and robbed in the garage of her home. The victim believes the perpetrators targeted her at and followed her home from a nearby restaurant that she is known as a "regular" at.

Employees at the restaurant who know the victim describe her as a "really sweet lady" and say she goes to the restaurant sometimes two to three times a day. "She's always giving compliments not only to me but to the rest of the staff, to other customers. I've seen her brighten up people's eyes just from the compliments," says Bianca Kallabat.

Late Monday morning the woman came to the Village Place on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield and was seated in a booth by herself. Then a male customer came in and asked to sit near her.

"The guy came in and was, like, insisting on sitting by her," remembers Monica Merzin.

"Someone who we've never seen before - the other wait staff, they knew that he didn't belong here," says Kallabat. Yet the man was seated in the booth behind hers.

"When she left, he left," says Merzin. And police say he and another man followed her home. Detectives say once she made it inside her garage the two men barged in and attacked, grabbing her arm and stealing a ring off her finger. The strong-arm robbery only lasted a few seconds and then they were gone.

"She's a strong woman. I definitely think she stuck up for herself. I know, definitely, she would do that," says Alissa Brown. Still, the woman was taken to the hospital. She sustained minor injuries.
