What's in a New York accent? Fuggedaboutit

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Those most mimicked sentences in the most mimicked accent (with apologies to the state of Massachusetts) for the most part sound pretty believable coming from the mouths of Brooklyn natives we spoke to.

Their inflections would delight filmmaker Heather Quinlan. But what she has to tell them might not go over as smoothly.

"There is no such thing as a Brooklyn accent. Please don't send me hate mail over that," she says. "It's more ethnic-specific than geographic."

Quinlan reached this conclusion while researching her film "If Knishes Could Talk: The Story of the New York Accent."

Most of us develop the way we speak between the ages of 3 and 7.

Quinlan's documentary shows that we match our accents to those of our friends.

From the earliest New York accents to the most brutalized interpretations, Quinlan says you can learn as much about a New Yorker from what they say as how they say it.

Step through the doors of Hope's Land of Candy in Island Park, Long Island and you''ll be taking a trip back in time. There's no WIFI but they do have a Victrola piano. And then there's the candy.. lots and lots of it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
