Sources: Feds probing Atlanta's water department

ATLANTA -

FOX 5 News has learned that the FBI is taking a look inside of Atlanta's water department. City workers who report having knowledge of criminal wrongdoing have recently sat down with agents to tell what they know, according to sources familiar with the case.

City workers and a top city official tell FOX 5 that they are aware of two interviews of separate acts of alleged wrongdoing conducted by the FBI. Now these serious allegations include major theft are really ratcheting up in the water bureau and caught the attention of the FBI. According to sources, they are conducting interviews with city employees from the department about alleged criminal behavior.

FOX 5 News has done numerous stories on the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars of public resources. A majority of it has been documented in Atlanta Police reports.

A former Federal prosecutor, Amy Weil, say any wrongdoing would have to be significant for the feds to get involved.

"The Federal government is going to become more interesting in doing any investigation of organized crime or a large number of people involved in criminal activity. Or if it involves a large amount of money because the investigations would probably not start unless there were allegations that were pretty significant," said Weil.

Sources say the FBI is interested in the possibility of a criminal enterprise inside the department, but also were asking questions about the city contracts in the water department.

A spokesman for the city of Atlanta says they have not been approached and are not aware of anything involving an FBI investigation. If and when they are approached, the feds will get the city's full cooperation.
