Tuesday night 35-year-old Shamekia Ballentine approached a 56-year-old woman in the parking lot of Hollywood Market on Opdyke in Bloomfield Hills as the woman was loading groceries into her car, put a knife to her throat and demanded her purse, according to police.

Alfonso Laster says he saw it happen.

"I jumped out of my car and I said, Hey, hey stop!'" says Laster.

"She's got a knife - put the knife down don't hurt her!" says Leon LeDuff. He heard the yelling and saw Laster going toward the women.

"She pushed the lady down again and just kept stabbing her, and I'm like, 'What are you doing?'" says Laster. "The actual attacker stood up and said, 'No you got it wrong, she's attacking me!' And I said, 'How is she attacking you?' And I noticed she a knife in her hand," he remembers.

As Laster was yelling at the suspect another man tackled her to the ground and they held her there, as you can see in recorded cell phone video, until police arrived.

Sgt. Timothy Abbo of Bloomfield Hills police says the men saved the victim's life. He describes the knife as "a large kitchen knife. I believe overall length was nine inches."

The victim ended up with only a cut on her hand that required stitches. Shamekia, who was intoxicated, is now charged with armed robbery and felonious assault. Police say she recently moved here from Ohio and hasn't had a run-in with the law since she was a juvenile.

Amy Lange reports the suspect had just told her roommates she was upset because she did not have money to give her kids a Christmas and that she was going to walk up to this store, but never indicated what she was going to do.
