WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -- Mayor Jim Fouts recognized three boys who turned in $100 they found in a box while playing in a Warren park.

Jason Burgess, Malachi Shelton and LaMont Kirkesy were presented Thursday with mayoral resolutions at city hall for their honesty.

Burgess took the box to his grandmother who saw that a $10 check inside was made payable to the nearby First Church of Jesus Christ.

"What a wonderful Christmas gift you have given to all of the young people in the metro area," said Fouts. "And that is you serve as models of honesty and integrity."

The money, check and donation box were returned to the church. The Rev. Charles Locklear says the money will be used for Christmas services.

"It's amazing," said Carol Fame, Jason's grandmother. "All the attention these three are getting shows that doing good things, you know, they get rewarded for it. So that's pretty awesome."

Burgess and Shelton are 10. Kirkesy is 7, the youngest person to be given a proclamation in Warren during Fouts' tenure.

"I think this is as much a tribute to these young men as being models as it is to the kind of parents they have. And I want to encourage that," said Fouts.

The boys say they plan to frame the proclamations and put them on the wall of their house so everyone can see them.
