Wolves pound Portland in the paint in 120-109 win

Posted: Updated:

The Portland Trailblazers rolled into Target Center on the final leg of a back to back and four games in five nights. They boast the best record in the NBA and reigning rookie of the year Damian Lillard, who beat the buzzer in two straight games, propelling rip city to victories. Lillard was able to pump in 36 points against the Wolves on Wednesday night, but it was the fast start by Minnesota that sent the Blazers back to Portland with a 120-109 loss.

At one point leading by 32 points, the Wolves jumped on the Blazers in the first half and led by Nikola Pekovic, outscored the Blazers in the paint 72-34. Pekovic led the way with 30 points on 14-19 shooting from the floor.

"72 points in the paint is a lot. We were very active. That's why it was very hard to duplicate the way we played the first half," head coach Rick Adelman said. "Fortunately we made some plays to open it up again in the third quarter at about 20. Portland is a very good team and they can score in bunches."

The Blazers attempted 40 3-point attempts and were able to close the gap and cut the lead to five points with 46 seconds left. Corey Brewer picked off a bad pass and the Wolves made their final six free-throws to put the game on ice.

Kevin Love finished with 29-points, 15-rebounds and nine assists in the win continuing to put up ridiculous statistics and be at the top of the early season list for MVP.

"He almost had a triple-double at half time," said Adelman. "He's been playing just great. Tonight was another example of that."

The Wolves even their record at 13-13 and they now travel to Los Angeles to face the Lakers on Friday night.

Notes:

Ricky Rubio continued to struggle from the floor shooting just 2-for-11 against Portland and combined has made just 4 field goals in 23 attempts over his last two games.

Love nearly posted a triple double at halftime with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Lillard is 15-for-26 from three point range over his last two games.
