Target Stores Investigating Credit Card Data Breach

Posted: Updated:

The Target corporation is investigating a possible data security breach that might involve millions of credit and debit cards swiped at the company's stores since November.

The U.S. Secret Service has confirmed the probe into the breach which may have originally occurred around Black Friday.

According to sources at two different top 10 credit card issuers, the breach extends to nearly all Target locations nationwide, and involves the theft of data stored on the magnetic stripe of cards used at the stores.

Investigators believe the breach, which involved theft of customer information off the magnetic strip on the back of swiped debit and credit cards, may have gone on for three weeks.

There are reports of customers across the country who have been victimized, but as yet, no word on the number of customers who may have had their information stolen.

The information stolen from the cards would theoretically allow criminals to create counterfeit  cards with the customer information, and use them like regular cards.

One credit card company source reports that they have been told that more than a million cards may have been affected, making this possibly one of the largest retail breaches ever.

Target Brands, Inc has not yet responded to requests for comment on the alleged breach, and representatives of the major credit card companies, Visa and MasterCard are presently unavailable for comment as well.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
