1 City, 1 Food Drive still in need of donations this holiday season

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One in six people in Cook County are faced with hunger and often times don't know where their next meal will come from. To help end hunger, groups like the Greater Chicago Food Depository kicked off a holiday food drive and it's coming to an end.

With less than a week before Christmas, Greater Chicago Food Depository volunteers want to make sure cans are labeled and no one goes hungry during the holidays.

"I know for me, I didn't know it was such a huge demand and so it's great that we're able to give something back," says volunteer Rachel Cooper.

FOX 32 News teamed up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to help fight hunger in Chicago and to help those in need.

1 City, 1 Food Drive kicked out last month with donation bins stationed at 500 locations in Chicago including the Merchandise Mart and Union Station. The goal is to collect 1 million pounds of food.

A lot of them came back full; others still need to be filled up.

"The truth is we need the help more than ever," says Jim Conwell with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. "The need in our community has been increasing and we need to meet that demand. We also talk about how the face of hunger in Chicago has changed.... We're serving 68% more people than we did 5 years...one in six people in our community is at risk of hunger and the face is changing. It's often someone who has a job, a working parent and it's a child."

When donations are down at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, fewer people can eat at food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

The 1 City, 1 Food Drive ends December 31st.
