Officials confirm rat problem extends to Atlanta school

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta Public Schools officials confirm that rats have been discovered inside an elementary school building connected to a recreation center. On Monday, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reported about the rodent problem at the MLK Jr. Recreation Center in downtown Atlanta.

Parents said they upset and only learned about the rat problem from FOX 5's report.

Atlanta Parks Commission George Dusenbury said that the rats are coming from a closed city pool that sits on of Boulevard Drive and Hope-Hill Elementary School that is connected to the rec center.

"That is why we are working with the school on one side and working expeditiously to take down a challenging natatorium…as quickly as possible," Dusenbury said.

School officials initially told FOX 5 that they didn't know about a rat problem inside the school, but late Tuesday confirmed that a rodent was found by a school custodian in a gym.

Children who use the gym told FOX 5 that they saw a rat scurrying about.

School officials said that some parents were told about the rodents at an assembly on Tuesday. In addition, a letter is slated to go out to parents notifying them about the rats. Officials stress that the problem is not serious and insist that the students are safe.
