Some resistance to Nelson Mandela-named co-located school

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott was supposed to pull a tarp down and reveal a new sign on the wall of the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood Tuesday. He did not show up. His office says it was due to scheduling conflicts.

He was to reveal this future home of the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice. Next September this school will be located inside Boys and Girls H.S.

Telanine Buisson, the chief of staff of Boys and Girls H.S., says this school community, while strongly supporting Nelson Mandela, does not want the new school here. They wanted a STEM school (science, technology, engineering and math). They also disliked what they called the top-down method of deciding there should be a new school within a school here, the third small high school inside the Boys and Girls H.S. facility.

In 1990 right after he left prison Nelson Mandela visited Boys and Girls H.S. That is why the Department of Education wants to place this new school into the Boys and Girls facility. A Department Education spokesperson stated: "We want to ensure that the special bond between the students and this legendary figure will live forever."

The physical facility here at Boys and Girls H.S., only occupied at half capacity, could double the number of students. Boys and Girls H.S. is a failing school, rated an F. The Department of Education under Mayor Bloomberg has had a policy of targeting failing schools by turning them into several smaller schools under one roof, something that Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has said deserves more community input.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
