`Netflix Adultery:` 51% of adults confess to secretly watching TV shows

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Have you heard about "Netflix adultery?" It's when a couple has a favorite show and they always watch it together, but then one person in the couple cheats and watches it on his or her own.

Netflix is said to have done an actual study about the cultural phenomenon that it, and DVR's, helped spawn. With so many of the gadgets out there -- and so many great shows -- it is a growing phenomenon.

In the study, 12 percent of American adults confessed to watching ahead on TV shows they were supposed to wait on to watch with their significant other.

Among those in committed relationships, 51 percent said they had, or would, commit "Netflix adultery."

Among the cheaters, 41 percent refrained from giving away any spoilers to their partners about what happened on the show.

12 percent say they re-watch the show with their partners and act like it's the first time. They even fake their reactions to what's happening.

Another 14 percent say they felt so guilty, they fessed up to their high-def infidelity.

Of course, Netflix has been more than happy to talk about its effect on American homes. It, too, has a sense of humor about it and a different term for what's been going on

In a statement, it said: "Netflix (use).... Seems to be leading to a cultural phenomenon of stream cheating. Netflix can't be held responsible for any trust issues, lovers' spats, or marital troubles that arise from watching ahead of your partner. We also will not cover any therapy sessions. As always, we advise to watch responsibly."
