Detroit remembers Nelson Mandela

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit joined in the memorialization of Nelson Mandela Sunday, on the day of his funeral in his native South Africa. Mayor Dave Bing declared Sunday "Nelson Mandela Day" in the city. Hartford Memorial Baptist Church hosted a service dedicated to the memory of Mandela, who died Dec. 5 at age 95.

Mandela made a stop in Detroit in 1990, shortly after leaving prison and before his election as South Africa's first black president.

U.S. Court of Appeals Court Judge Damon Keith says he helped make sure that Rosa Parks met Mandela, picking her up and driving her to the rally at Tiger Stadium.

Keith says Mandela bypassed the governor and others and headed straight for Parks, telling her she gave him strength during his 27 years in prison.
