LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Grieving family members of a 23-year-old murder victim addressed the court before seeing Lake Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez impose a 45-year sentence for her killer, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Edward Arnold recalled the last hours he spent with his daughter, Christine Arnold, as they watched a sunset on Lake Michigan. "Twenty-four hours later, she was dead at the hands of the defendant," Arnold said, referring to Cadereo Jester. Arnold said there are constant reminders in the family home of things his artistic daughter made. "I cry every day," he said, noting that Friday was her birthday— both the happiest and saddest day of Arnold's life.

"My anger burns eternally," he said.

Jester 27, of Gary, admitted on July 18, 2011, he and Christine Arnold were together in the 300 block of Hovey Street in Gary. A dispute arose, and Jester killed Arnold. He left her body and car in a wooded area of the Ivanhoe Nature Conservancy property at 4th Avenue and Hamlin Street in Gary.

Arnold said he knows his daughter was beaten and fought back for about 20 minutes before Jester stabbed her with a piece of glass and broke her neck. Still, he and the family have unanswered questions, including how Jester and his daughter met.Jester had withdrawn his plea agreement and asked for a new public defender. But he resubmitted the agreement on Nov. 15.

Friday in court, he read a letter of apology.

"I deeply apologize for my actions on 7-18-11. I never intended to hurt anyone let alone kill anyone," Jester said. "I wish I could give Mr. Arnold his child back. I wish there was something I could do to make his pain go away."

Jester told the judge he was "given up" at age 8. "I never had love for anybody or anything," he said. But while in the Lake County Jail, Jester said he started reading the Bible and realized he was living foolishly and not thinking of others. He said he wants to work toward getting his children back in his life "and give them the love I never had."

The plea agreement included the 45-year prison sentence, the minimum for murder in Indiana.
