Snowfall hinders holiday shopping for some

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

From the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping on the Magnificent Mile to the suburbs, layers of snow covered streets and parking lots on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

"It seems kind of quiet, so I guess a lot of people must have been deterred," said Dan Weldon, a Crystal Lake resident.

According to the National Retail Federation, the average holiday shopper has completed half of their shopping so far. This is slightly less than the nearly 57% completed by this time last year.

The snow was another blow.

"It really didn't bother us, but it has been very quiet here all day. There really haven't been many people," said Weldon.

Not what retailers want to hear less than two weeks before Christmas, but for Meaghan Burns and others who came to the Fashion Outlets mall in Rosemont - several inches of snow outside meant smaller crowds and shorter lines inside.

"The snow made us want to shop more… I'm just happy. We can get in and out of stores, we had no wait at the food court, it was a nice shopping day," said Burns.

A holiday shoppers dream, but is the big shopping weekend a bust?

"No, absolutely not - had a plan for a couple of weeks and we decided to still come out… The main roads were pretty good. The plows were out there salting and everything so I don't think traffic should be an issue for people to come out today," said April Huskey, a Bridgeview resident.

However, not everyone is convinced the snow didn't hinder holiday shoppers from coming out.

"The reason why my husband and I decided to drive from Country Club Hills, almost 35 miles, is because we knew that almost everybody would be inside their home," said Deborah Jennings, a Country Club Hills resident.

Retailers are surely hoping to make up for this weekend next weekend on Super Saturday, the Saturday before Christmas.

"I think that probably next week you'll see the discounts because of the weather. I feel sorry for the retailers, however I love shopping," said Jennings.
