BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

ALSIP, Ill. (AP) -- An official with the suburban Chicago chemical plant where an explosion triggered a fire says that emergency workers have extinguished the blaze.

Blue Island Phenol plant manager Bill Moffatt says firefighters put the fire out by 2:20 p.m. Friday, nearly three hours after arriving at the plant in Alsip.

Moffatt says a leak of "gas material" triggered the explosion and fire in an area where perhaps 24 people were working, injuring two of them.

He says they were taken to an area hospital where they are in stable condition. He says he did not have any other details.

A man who lives about three blocks away tells the Chicago Sun-Times he heard a muffled noise and his entire house shook. He says he thought it was an earthquake.
