Tragedy strikes Winder family twice

Posted: Updated:
BARROW COUNTY, Ga. -

A local family is trying to cope with the loss of a 13-month-old boy who died just days after another tragedy.

Miles Murray died last Wednesday after his mother accidentally backed into him on Bowman Terrace Road in Winder. He was just 13 months old.

Miles' uncle, Donald Murray, said that the toddler's father had pulled the boy from the child safety seat and brought him into the garage. From the corner of his eye, Donald Murray said he caught a last glimpse of Miles by the car.

"I seen the car move out of the corner of my eye and started just screaming, ‘Miles could be back there! Miles is back there,'" Donald Murray said.

Miles' funeral was Wednesday. His uncle, who has children of his own, says the death of the toddler is a reminder to other parents to never lose site of the children.

"It happened very fast and it can turn into a very horrific accident very quickly," said Donald Murray.

The sudden loss of Miles was the second tragedy for the family this holiday season. Sheila Murray's 28-year-old son, Brad, died in late November at his Dacula home. The medical examiner ruled that death a suicide. Sheila said she doesn't believe that ruling.  She hopes investigators will find more evidence pointing away from suicide.

Sheila said that Miles was one of the bright spots after Brad's funeral. Now that both are gone she's putting her faith in God and family.

"Both Miles and Brad were blessings and gifts and we have to realize that we never know how long we're going to be here," Sheila Murray said.

Murray said she wanted to publicly thank those who've come to her family's aid, from people who knew her son Brad as the assistant manager at an Ingles in Lawrenceville to the man who gave her a children's Bible for Miles before the toddler was killed.

If you would like to help the family, contact Sheila Murray on her Facebook page.
